What Causes Headaches

Once in our lifetime we have had a headache, you know that

it can feel like your brain is trying to

push its way out of your head and while

that may make for a cool sci-fi movie it

throbs and it is generally a pretty bad

time so what the heck is going on here

Well, let's start off with a common

misconception: your brain is not actually

the thing that is hurting is, in fact, your

brain doesn't even have pain receptors

like the other parts of your body do

this is why it's possible for surgeons

to operate on a patient's brain while

they're still awake so if it's not the

brain that's hurting

What works well for most migraines? Blood.

Vessels seem to be the main culprit.

The theory is that serotonin and the other

Chemical messengers cause blood vessels

around the brain and head to swell this

increases blood flow and stretches

nearby nerve cells which send pain

signals to the brain and thus our heads

hurt along with vomiting and nausea, the

only Silver Lining is that migraines

only tend to affect one side of the head

Tension headaches, on the other hand

affect both sides and feel like a tight

band is squeezing the top of your head

as the name suggests these headaches are

the result of tension in the muscles of

your head and sometimes neck and if

you've ever gotten a headache after

wearing glasses with the wrong

prescription it's because the eye strain

triggered it lastly if you're going to

take painkillers to relieve the pain be

careful if you take them for too long

you may develop a medication overuse

headache Yes, you heard me right.

medication to treat headaches may cause

even more headaches kind of defeats the

purpose, doesn't it? Scientists aren't

exactly sure what causes them but it

seems to be connected to headache

specific pain Pathways and changes in

neuronal excitability.
